Health Check.

If a closer is present, does it fully close the door without pushing? Safely release the door from fully open and from about 15°. Check that it closes fully into the frame without catching or bouncing open. Keep fingers clear.

Are the door, frame and surrounding wall free from visible splits, holes, warping or significant damage?

Do the hinges appear secure, with no visible loose or missing screws, no oil leaking and no damaged parts? Do not remove or adjust fittings.

With the door closed, do the gaps at the top and sides look reasonably even, with no obvious large gaps? A visual check cannot verify permitted clearances.

If strips or smoke seals are fitted, do they look continuous and undamaged, with no loose sections? Their absence alone does not establish that an existing door is unsuitable.

If glass is present, are the glass and the surrounding beads or retaining system free from visible cracks, damage or loose parts?

Do fitted handles, latches and letterboxes appear secure and function correctly, with the letterbox flap closing?

Is the door free of wedges or obstructions, with no obvious interference with its closer? Approved automatic hold-open systems need separate assessment.

As far as you know, has the door remained unchanged since its last assessment, with no unassessed replacement, new holes or altered glazing or fittings? Choose “Not sure” if its history is unknown.
